Launch Ceremony of the Partnership Between UNDP, MaryKay and All China Women's Federation

14 Sep 2011

UN Under-Secretary General and UNDP Associate Administrator, Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, attended the Past and Future: China Women's Development Foundation Mary Kay Women's Small Business Fund 10 Year Anniversary, on 14 September 2011. The event which was hosted by CCTV Anchor and UNDP Special Advisor on Partnership and Communications, Ms. Tian Wei, was attended by more than 120 Fund beneficiaries, and senior dignitaries representing each of the three main partners, including Ms. Chen Zhili, President of the All-China Women’s Federation, Mr. Paul Mak, President of Mary Kay (China), and Ms. Grynspan of UNDP. Ms. Grynspan delivered a powerful speech on the need to empower women.

The event was significant for the announcement of a partnership between United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF) (as a subsidiary of the All-China Women’s Federation), and cosmetic firm, Mary Kay (China). Drawing on more than 30 years experience in providing business development opportunities for poor women in China, UNDP will focus its efforts on enhancing the effectiveness of grants provided to ethnic minority women through the Mary Kay Women’s Small Business Fund. This will involve providing training to Fund beneficiaries aimed at enhancing their capacities to self-manage and organise their workforces, and generate benefits for entire communities.

“Studies have shown that employing women not only adds more to GDP than new jobs for men, but also adds more than productivity and capital investment,” Ms. Grynspan said while addressing the event. Therefore, if China’s development ambitions are to be fully realised, further empowering women to seize upon the opportunities presented by China’s impressive growth will be crucial”.
