On United Nations Weibo Campaign, Jet Li shares the future he wants

What kind of world you would like to live in 20 years from now? The Department of Public Information of United Nations, United Nations Development Programme and other UN agencies in China jointly launched the "The Future We Want" public-participation campaign on Sina weibo in late March. Since then, there have been nearly 50,000 users who actively participated in the event. Today, Jet Li, the Kung Fu star and founder of One Foundation, shared his expectations of the future.

“Although we all share the same planet, not everyone can change the world in the same way and few individuals can change it by themselves,” said Jet Li. “Whether we like it or not, our world is constantly changing in terms of our material values, our laws, our politics and our societies. But what may one individual change?”

To this question, Jet Li gave his own answer. “As individuals, therefore, one of the most powerful things we can do is to change ourselves; to change our perspective towards change and to work together towards a healthier and happier future.” Thus, he hopes everyone will live in a healthier and happier world in 20 years time.

Jet Li’s ties to the United Nations date back to 1974, when then only 11-year-old boy visited and performed at the UN Headquarter with a Chinese martial arts delegation. In his subsequent acting career and charitable activities, Jet Li paid several visits to the United Nations, participating in the activities of UNDP and other agencies, and served as the Goodwill Ambassador of World Health Organizations. Today, Jet Li joined hands again with the United Nations Weibo campaign, aiming to raise the public awareness of UN sustainable development conference and our own futures.

Besides Jet Li, Yao Chen, UN Refugee Agency’s honorary patron for China, also shared her vision about the future via Weibo. Zhou Xun, actress and National Goodwill Ambassador of United Nations Development Programme, recorded a video calling for more people to participate in the event as well. It is said that celebrities including the Goodwill Ambassadors of UN agencies, film stars, sports stars, artists, business leaders, writers and scholars, will be invited to join the campaign in raising public awareness.

"The Future We Want" is the theme of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, which will be held in June in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Conference is going to discuss and decide on how to accelerate action for a healthier, more equitable and more prosperous world for all. Before the gathering of world leaders in Rio, the United Nations would like to engage people in an online campaign and share the kind of world they expect to live in 20 years from now. People are encouraged to send texts, drawings, photographs, audios or videos to illustrate a sustainable future might look like. The final selection will pick the top 10 winners, who will receive souvenirs and certificates provided by the United Nations. In addition, these award-winning works will be shown to world leaders during the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.
