UNDP’s support within this project focuses on developing the institutional capacity of UXO Lao to undertake all aspects of planning, implementation, quality and financial management in order to address the long-term humanitarian and development challenges posed by the presence of UXO.

The overall objective of the UXO Lao component in the three- year project is to build and further strengthen the institutional capacity of UXO Lao to be better able to manage clearance and risk education programmes for the needs of communities who are at risk of coming in contact with UXO. With support from UNDP and donors, UXO Lao will also seek to achieve the following key results for the period 2013-2015:

  • 9,000 hectares of priority landreleased
  • 200,000 UXO items destroyed
  • 800,000 beneficiaries

  • 29,929 hectares of land have been released through area clearance and technical survey activities reaching 4,946,078 beneficiaries. 384,474 items of UXO were destroyed of which 189,214 were sub-munitions (or bombies).

  • 25,296 roving tasks (where villages call for assistance when they locate UXO) were conducted in 3,751 villages removing 855,754 items of UXO including 338,167 sub-munitions or bombies, with a response time of not more than two weeks from request to task completion.

  • Besides areas cleared for agricultural land, UXO Lao also contributes to the Lao Government’s development projects, as well as those of other international organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGO) to allow infrastructure development to happen including the establishment of irrigation projects, schools, hospitals, health centres, clean water projects, roads, and other development activities.

  • Between 1996 and 2013, 10,345 risk education activities were conducted by UXO Lao staff as well as village volunteers and reached 2,626,337 people.

  • In 2013, more than 50% of recipients of risk education were female. 78% of village volunteers working to raise community awareness on the dangers of UXO are female.

  • UXO Lao has three all-female UXO clearance teams.
