Members of Parliaments of Serbia, Romania, Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova gathered in Chisinau to discuss the role of Parliaments in fighting corruption. The two-day workshop is organized by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova with the support of UNDP’s Democracy Programme funded by the Governments of Denmark and Sweden.

The Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Moldova has now an electronic registry of arms which ensures a more efficient control and management of the legal circulation of small and light arms. The Government of Romania provided assistance worth US$ 113.000 through a project aimed at strengthening the capacities of the Ministry of Interior in fighting crime, implemented by UNDP, to ensure a secure and swift exchange of data on the circulation of small and light arms in the Republic of Moldova.

Young musicians from both sides of the Nistru River held together a classical music concert on November 8, at the “Serghei Lunchevici” National Philharmonic in Chisinau. These laureates of international contests, accompanied by the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, delighted the audience with new interpretations of Tchaikovsky’s most adored creations.

School and kindergarten from Cotul Morii have energy independence due to the modern biofuel heating system
A modern biofuel heating system has been launched today at the school and kindergarten from Cotul Morii of Hincesti District. These premises – attended by more than 250 children and teaching staff – are heated now with biofuel produced locally. The Community has no access to the heating network fuelled with natural gas.

More than 100 visually impaired children will benefit from better education and rehabilitation treatment after the only specialized kindergarten in Tiraspol has been entirely repaired. This is the result of the joint efforts by EU and UNDP within a larger programme of supporting confidence building measures between people from both banks of the Nistru River.

In Cocieri, promoting trust means a renovated high school for children from both banks of Nistru River
Jana Gatcan from Vasilievca village wakes up every morning at 6 and walks 30 km to get to the high school from Cocieri. This year, due to the new roof the high school is more welcoming to her and other 330 children who come here from 8 communities from both banks of Nistru River. Jana knows who made it happen - a programme that helps people on both banks of Nistru River to live better together.

Third National Report on Millennium Development Goals in Moldova: from a patriarchal society to a modern one – the gender-based gap in opportunities
„The Republic of Moldova has not made yet significant progress in promoting gender equality and women empowerment”, the Third National Report on the Millennium Development Goals notes. It also mentions that this lack of progress has had major implications for the achievement of MDGs. The authors of the Report believe that „opportunities for women’s political empowerment (through affirmative actions and training) and economic empowerment (through entrepreneurship programs and training)” should be the main priorities in this area.
