    Japan Provides Emergency Funding for Rubble Removal in Gaza through UNDP

    UNDP has been entrusted with a USD 500,000 contribution from the Government of Japan to remove rubble and debris in the Gaza Strip. With the Government of Japan’s contribution, around 30,000 tonnes of rubble will be removed over the period of 10 months, generating approximately 5,400 workdays.

    UNDP Signs USD 10 Million Agreement with USAID for Rubble Removal in Gaza

    UNDP and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) signed a USD 10 million agreement to remove rubble and debris in the Gaza Strip. The USAID contribution will enable UNDP to clear around 65% (649,177 tonnes) of the rubble generated in hard hit areas in Rafah, Khan Younis, Gaza City and northern governorates. The project will be implemented over a period of one year and will generate approximately 116,852 workdays.

    Sweden, through UNDP, to support cash assistance programme for displaced population in Gaza

    The Government of Sweden and UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People announced a USD 3.4 million contribution to fund cash assistance packages for non-refugees as part of their on-going support to early recovery efforts in the Gaza Strip.

    Under the Auspices of Prime Minister Al Hamdallah UNDP begins removing rubble in Gaza, with funding from Sweden

    His Excellency Prime Minister Rami Al Hamdallah witnessed the signature of a USD 3.2 million agreement with the Government of Sweden and UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People to begin the removal of rubble and debris in the Gaza Strip.

    UNDP and the Ministry of Labour roll out Cash for Work Programme for affected communities in Gaza

    UNDP and the Ministry of Labour signed agreements with seven non-governmental organizations to partner in the cash for work programme following the 2014 Gaza crisis. Cash assistance worth USD 1 million from UNDP’s own resources will be provided to create 1000 employment opportunities in four sectors; agriculture, education, environment and health.

    UNDP signs USD 10 million agreement with Islamic Development Bank for housing in Gaza

    UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People and the Palestinian Government, represented by the Prime Minister’s office, signed a USD 10 million agreement with the Islamic Development Bank to reconstruct partially damaged housing units in Gaza. Non-refugee families whose homes have been partially damaged during the recent conflict will receive cash assistance to address their accommodation needs.

    UN Secretary General visits UNDP fishermen project in Gaza

    UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited one of the UNDP projects that support Gaza fisheries, where he met with Gaza’s sole registered fisherwoman. The project is strengthening livelihoods through the construction of 24 brick huts for 168 fishermen in Gaza’s port to enable them to secure their fishing equipment.

    UNDP boosts legal aid provision to over 40,000 people in the Gaza Strip

    UNDP will provide legal aid services to over 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza who have suffered as a direct result of the 51-day Israeli Operation in July-August 2014. With a USD 530,000 investment, legal aid services will be provided to people who seek legal redress, including legal information, legal advice and mediation, legal and judicial representation, advocacy and policy analysis.

    Announcing the Start of Funding for Shelter in Gaza and Appealing for Additional Support

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced a USD 1 million in funds for shelter support in Gaza at a joint press conference with UNRWA and the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. Through this funding, support will be provided to non-refugee families whose houses were damaged or destroyed in order to find alternative accommodation through rental subsidies, repair assistance and cash for work.

    UNDP Announces New Head of Gaza Office

    Mr Nicholas Hercules has been appointed as the new head of the UNDP office in the Gaza Strip. He has served the United Nations over the past twelve years, with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN’s Department for Peacekeeping, where his work has focused on crisis recovery and development in challenging environments from Afghanistan to the Balkans and the south Pacific.

    The Netherlands Signs Contribution Agreement to the UNDP/UN Women Joint Programme in Support of the Palestinian Rule of Law Sector

    Demonstrating their steadfast support to the rule of law and community access to justice and security, the Government of the Netherlands and UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People signed, on behalf of the Multi Partner Trust Fund an USD 8.1 million contribution agreement covering a period of three years.

    Funded by The Government of Saudi Arabia UNDP Raffles off 350 Housing Units to Families in Gaza

    With funding from the Government of Saudi Arabia, 350 families are the proud owners of houses handed over to them by UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People in cooperation with the Municipalities of Rafah and Beit Lahia and the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. The USD 25 million project has generated over 100,000 workdays for workers in the construction industry at a time when unemployment in the Gaza Strip is over 41 percent.

    Funded by Japan and Implemented by UNDP Beit Jala Girls School Celebrates the Opening of its New Building

    Today marked an important step forward for girls in the Beit Jala School as they celebrated the inauguration of their new building in the Bethlehem Governorate of the West Bank. The school was funded by the Government of Japan and implemented by UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and the Municipalities of Bethlehem and Beit Jala.

    UNDP and UN Women sign a USD 29.5 million Agreement with the Palestinian Ministries of Justice and Interior

    In a concerted effort to strengthen the rule of law and improve access to justice across the occupied Palestinian territory, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior, UN Women and UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People signed a USD 29.5 million agreement to support the establishment of a viable Palestinian state solidly based on the rule of law, human rights and justice.

    UNDP and the General Personnel Council Graduate Civil Service Employees in Information Technology

    The General Personnel Council (GPC), in cooperation with Al-Quds Open University and the United Nations Development Programme held a graduation ceremony for Palestinian civil servants who completed training courses in information technology. The main objective of the courses was to train 50 civil servants, 10 of whom were women, in Java, Linux and Oracle, as part of GPC’s efforts to develop a Human Resources Management Information System (HRMIS) in cooperation with relevant ministries.

    UNDP Signs Agreements with OFID in Support of East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip Projects

    Under the auspices of the Ministry of Jerusalem Affairs, the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed agreements worth USD 3.3 million to implement projects in support of the resilience of Palestinians residing in East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip. The grant will contribute to the renovation and expansion of existing maternity wards in two of the four hospitals located in the Gaza Strip, namely Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza city and Al Nasser Complex in Khan Younis.

    With funding from Sweden and Austria - UNDP Signs Agreements with NGOs in Support of East Jerusalem

    Under the auspices of the Ministries of Planning and Administrative Development and Jerusalem Affairs, UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People signed agreements with ten NGOs to implement a USD 1.2 million project to support the resilience of Palestinians residing in East Jerusalem with funding from the Governments of Austria and Sweden through Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

    UNDP to Build USD 58 million Waste Water Treatment Plant in Gaza With Japan and Kuwait Funding through Islamic Development Bank

    The Palestinian Water Authority, Coastal Municipalities Water Utility, Khan Younis Municipality and UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People signed today a USD 58 million agreement to construct the Khan Younis Waste Water Treatment Plant in the Gaza Strip. The implementation, construction and co-financing of the Plant will be through UNDP, in partnership with the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility, with funds from the Government of Japan and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development through the Islamic Development Bank.

    UNDP Administrator visits Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People
