The future of international development cooperation to be debated in İstanbul

18 Jun 2014

An international conference which aims to bring together both traditional and emerging development cooperation providing countries with their developing country partners to collectively discuss and develop new understandings, approaches and opportunities for the future of international development cooperation will be held in İstanbul on 19-20 June.

İstanbul, 17 June 2014 – The conference on ‘International Development Cooperation: Trends and Emerging Opportunities-Perspectives of the New Actors’ will be co-hosted by the Republic of Turkey Prime Ministry Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Emrullah İşler, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey, and Helen Clark, UNDP Administrator and former Prime Minister of New Zealand will deliver the opening speeches at the Conference.

The conference aims to contribute to the ongoing global debate on international development cooperation and is being organized at a critical juncture between the Mexico High Level Meeting on the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation held in April 2014 and the upcoming UN Development Cooperation Forum in July 2014 in New York.

High level participation from around the world

The perspectives of countries that have recently become significant contributors to development cooperation in the changing global landscape will be highlighted during the conference.

The conference will bring together a number of ministers, heads of development cooperation agencies and senior government officials from emerging and other developing economies and traditional donor countries, with representatives from prominent international organizations, NGO representatives and academics working in the field of development cooperation.

As a founding member of the OECD and an important emerging development cooperation provider, Turkey will co-host the conference with UNDP, the UN’s development network which is present in 177 countries and territories. In 2013, Turkey’s total Official Development Assistance reached $3,28 billion, and it has become a source of knowledge and expertise for many of the neighboring countries and beyond.

Turkey is particularly eager to exchange experiences and perspectives with other emerging development cooperation providers, such as the Republic of Korea, Mexico, China, Brazil, India, South Africa, Russia and other partners.

The conference also aims at facilitating a broader dialogue amongst “traditional” and “new” development cooperation providers to support an inclusive multilateral discourse in this area.
