Crisis Prevention & Recovery

Disasters and violent conflicts are among the two greatest threats to progress in human development in the 21st century. This is why crisis prevention and recovery is a cornerstone of the work of UNDP. In 2011 UNDP provided risk reduction, prevention and recovery support to more than 80 countries, stabilizing communities, supporting short-term employment and livelihoods, reestablishing governance and the rule of law, and promoting gender equality throughout. We support countries to manage conflict and disaster risks, and to rebuild for resilience once crisis has past. Our crisis recovery work is based on carefully conducted joint needs assessments and acts as a bridge between humanitarian and longer-term development efforts.

Our Goal

We aim to ensure that UNDP’s development efforts, and those of the wider UN system in situations of fragility, incorporate necessary elements of crisis prevention and timely recovery support. This requires a focus on skills and capacities in national institutions and communities – in order that risks of disasters and violent conflict are minimized and a foundation for sustainable development secured.

Responding to the crisis in the Horn of Africa

After consecutive seasons of inadequate rainfall, countries in the Horn of Africa are facing the worst drought in 60 years – leading to the largest food crisis in 20 years, and the world’s first famine of this century. UNDP is engaged with humanitarian actors in the region as an essential part of the response, addressing underlying factors of livelihoods and governance. Credit photo: UN Photo/Stuart Price more
